Windows Sandbox released by Microsoft is available for everyone, but you need to update your Windows 10 to version 1903 or later. So, you might be wondering what is Windows Sandbox? How to install Windows Sandbox on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10? or why is Windows Sandbox Missing on your Computer? Well, I will be covering everything related to this and also the fixes so you don’t have to face any issue.
What is Windows Sandbox?
This is a newly developed Microsoft app for users who want to test new applications before installing directly on their computer or pc. Some people like to test their executable file on Virtual Machines like Virtual Box, VMWare Workstation, Virtual PC, etc.. and this takes lots of RAM, Disk, CPU, and load on your computer. The big problem is you have to do a clean installation of Windows to Run Virtual Machine. Thanks to Microsoft for this new Windows Update where you get Windows Sandbox option available and the only thing you need to do is to enable that option.
Do you need Windows Sandbox?
Have you ever faced this issue like you have installed untrusted application downloaded from the internet and later you see that your pc is infected by Virus? Well, this happened with me many times, I downloaded and installed a new untrusted Windows Application on my laptop and somehow I installed viruses as well. To fix this you should use Sandbox because it’s isolated, temporary, desktop environment. If the app is going to install virus then it will be installed on Sandbox only and will not affect your host. When you close the Sandbox everything will be permanently erased so your pc will not be infected.
How to install Windows Sandbox on Windows 7 or Windows 10?
If you want to install Sandbox on Windows 7 then I am sorry because this new app will not work on the older version of Windows. You must have the latest version of Windows 10 installed on your computer and also meet the minimum requirements to run this app.
- Windows 10 Professional or Later
- AMD64 Bit Processor
- 2 CPU cores
- 4GB RAM
- 1GB Free Disk Space
- Virtualization must be enabled in BIOS
How to Enable Virtualization?
Well, I have written a nice article on How to Enable Virtualization on any System. Visit there and follow step by step guide.
How to Enable Windows Sandbox?
Windows Sandbox is available on the latest version of Windows 10, so make sure to Check for Update and always update your system because this improves your system security and bugs fixes. Here are the Steps to Enable Windows SandBox
- Make sure Virtualization is Enabled.
- Press Windows Button on your Keyboard and search for Turn Windows feature on or off.
- Now scroll down and search and select Windows Sandbox.
- Click on OK to install Windows Sandbox on your system.
- Restart your Computer
Voila, you have successfully installed Windows Sandbox on your computer. To verify whether the app is installed or not, search on your computer for Windows Sandbox and you will see the application, just open the app and you are good to go. Install and test any app you like.
Windows Sandbox Missing?
If Windows Sandbox is Missing on Turn Windows on or off then the issue is with your operating system or Virtualization is not enabled on your pc. If you are running Windows 10 Home Edition or Windows 10 Single Language then Windows Sandbox will not be shown because Sandbox requires Windows 10 Professional or Enterprise. This is the reason why Windows Sandbox option is missing and to fix this you have to upgrade your pc to Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise edition. If you are running Pro version but still Windows Sandbox is missing then this means that virtualization is not enabled and you need to enable it.
How to Check whether Virtualization is Enabled or Disabled on my System
Some computers don’t have Virtualization option in BIOS and it is enabled by default, so you don’t have to worry if there is no option in BIOS. I have Asus F570Z laptop and there is no Virtualization option in BIOS but it’s enabled by default on my System. Here are some methods to check if Virtualization is enabled on your pc or not.
1st Method to Check if Virtualization is enabled on your pc or not is by going to Task Manager -> Performance Tab. You will see Virtualization is enabled or disabled. If enabled then your CPU supports Virtualization and you will be able to run Windows Sandbox and if disabled then your CPU does not support virtualization and you will not able to run Windows Sandbox.
2nd Method to Check Virtualization is by going to Command Prompt. Press Window Logo + R and type cmd then press enter or click on OK. By doing this you will see that the Command Prompt app is opened. Now simply type systeminfo and press enter.
Now you will see all the system information written in Command Prompt. Scroll Down and search for Hyper-V Requirements. If you see Virtualization Enabled in Firmware: Yes then Virtualization is enabled on your System and you can run Windows Sandbox on your pc. If you see Virtualization Enabled in Firmware: No then it means that your CPU is not supported and you will not able to run the new SandBox app.
As told earlier, If Windows Sandbox is missing then upgrade your pc to Windows 10 Pro or maybe virtualization is not enabled. Still, you face any issue with Sandbox? Then comment down below, so i will try my best to solve your issue.
